This piece is called oceanic. The dress is drawn using contour lines in black and white charcoal. The figure is shaded in white to contrast with the dress and the black hatching in the background, and I chose a gray/lavender paper which sets a good mid-tone.

The painting is of me and two of my awesome friends, based off a picture I took of us. The inspiration was to make a painting where I could involve the audience, and have their imagination run freely as to what the three figures in the picture are looking at, and what they are looking from (example being a box or behind a tree).

I love words, the meanings, origins, the sounds, and because of this, poetry is a form of art that I wholeheartedly delve into. Writing is an an expression of thought, words that I can bend, combine, shape, and mold to create something moving. Line structure and breaks, word combinations, and inspirations are endless, and I find comfort and relief while running, skipping, or tiptoeing across the infinity of writing. I focus on free-verse nature poetry, and incorporate elements such as sunlight and rain in my pieces, but recently, I’ve been branching out to discover other realms.
Back and Forth
We rocked back and forth
on the rickety old bench swing.
Slim boards
creaked as we swung,
leaves fluttered
from shivering
branches
back and forth.
Delight threaded
our voices
as we were lifted
higher, above
adjacent brushes,
back and forth.
A dip in the dry dirt
under our blue and green
sandals,
where we pushed off
every aftternoon,
and skidded to a halt.
Your gentle sliding
feet, shushing
the ground beneath us,
a harmony
as we met the horizon,
slipped below,
and rose above,
back and forth.

In my artwork, as well as personality, I love color and use it to present my thoughts and feelings. This is a piece where I feel like I’ve used contrast and color to the full advantage of getting my point across by using a dull, plain gray scale to hide what I don’t want my audience to pay attention to, while bright, vivd colors spread the message. The idea behind this piece is that politicians will say and do anything to get your vote, so what they “bring to the table” is economic stability, peace, honesty, job and homeland security; they can, and do, promise to bring you these things because of their high morals and religious backgrounds. With huge contrasts in color, I make what these politicians “promise” loud and clear, but hide the fact that a majority of these candidates are lying (he is crossing his left hand fingers). This ink drawing is my way of expressing to not just the solo viewer, but making a connection with an entire nation that lurking in the shadows is at least one person lying through their teeth just for a vote. This work of mine best represents me on many levels: not just on my opinion that people should watch men like the one portrayed with caution, or my personal feelings of not wanting to buy into the hype of whatever wise-guy goes up on camera, but the fact that I have been this man before, and that at some point everyone has been a politician aiming to answer with only words someone else wants to hear, because we are all alike more than we would like to think. In all my work, I will always leave room for further interpretation and deeper meaning, and this one happens to be the easiest for endless amounts of interpretation.
